Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the green building rating system created by the U.S. Green Building Council. It recognizes buildings that meet high standards for sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
Cleaning practices play a real role in earning and maintaining LEED points — from the products used to how waste and recycling are managed day to day. Aid Maintenance is Green Clean and LEED certified, and works with facility managers to align cleaning operations with LEED requirements.
A building earns LEED points across categories such as energy, water, materials, and indoor environmental quality. The total number of points determines which of four certification levels it reaches:
LEED certifies building projects. It is administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) for the U.S. Green Building Council, and exact requirements depend on the LEED version and rating system a project uses.
For existing buildings, the LEED for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) rating system includes requirements tied directly to cleaning, such as having a green cleaning policy, and gives credit for green cleaning practices and for reducing and recycling waste. A cleaning contractor cannot certify a building on its own, but day-to-day cleaning and waste handling are part of what a LEED project has to carry out and document.
